A couple of weeks into writing the poem, I got obsessed with
the idea of writing this poem in first person point of view. What was
contradicting the whole setup, however, was the fact that the issue of being
judged is so universal that limiting the omniscient would just have not done
justice to the poem. That’s when I decided to go for a path that dealt with
both simultaneously. When you read the poem you’d realize that the point of
view of the poem is both first person and
third person. This makes the poem universal while at the same time also helps
the readers resonate on a personal level.
Being dramatic, which you are.
For those of us who have been subjected to judgement from
irrelevant people (viz. all of us), would not be surprised by how ridiculous
yet dumbfounding the allegations on Mr. I were. The blames were direct and
denied the accused of any chance of clarifying or justifying himself.
“There are anonymous sources,
Whose reporting we have considered.”
Who are these sources? Are they the vamps of our lives? Are
they the envious competitors? Are they humans at all? Most of the times, these
sources are the brains of the judgemental people themselves. Renowned American
fiction writer, Gayle Forman has pertinently said, “People believe what they
want to believe”. There is nothing you can do or say that would change their
minds. This theory extends to something that I am covering in one of my
upcoming poems. You may try all you want, all you can. You may go beyond your capacity,
but people will remain blind to the amount of efforts you put for the sake of
their happiness because they choose to do so.
Yes, the judge isn’t some higher authority, it is the people themselves.
Based on what appearances convey.
How much do things sell on the basis of their external
appearances. There’s a reason why presentation is often an evaluative component
in Language exams. More than the content, the handwriting often factors in for
a higher score. People don’t want to put in effort to find out the exact truth.
They take things the way they come. Glossy headlines are created keeping this
human psychology in mind.
All these fingers pointing at you
Will soon make you question yourself.
I was extremely scared of how people would react to this
poem because it was inspired by some of the instances that occurred in the past
year and involved some of my good friends. I kept being scared until came the
day when I named my poem and decided the direction in which it was going to go.
It was going to thrash the judgements of the judgemental and that’s when I knew
I needed to stop worrying/caring so much about the output and just write it
down. That’s exactly what I want to convey to my readers. It’s important that
you speak up. As long as your words aren’t maligned with bad intention, you're good to go. You
can’t keep typing and deleting it all out. You can’t keep sulking in a dark corner
because your talent is unconventional. You can’t stop standing up for what is
right because some people find it comfortable to slacken off, be indifferent
and call you dramatic to validate their lack of confidence. You can’t keep staring at the pointy end of others’
fingers and feeling incredulous about yourself.
Or should I get other people tried?
If the readers would have noticed, a judgement was released
but punishment was never announced. What I had in my mind was to draw analogy between a courtoom and the
society using this tool. The reality is that the judgement of whether someone is guilty or not
is decided by the detractors, but the punishment is decided by the victim himself. The duration for which the detractor’s destructive comments stay in
the person’s head is the duration the person serves.
Thank you for coming out in large numbers and supporting my
poem the way you did, making it one of my most read and shared works ever. I'm glad you liked my work and am overwhelmed by your constant support. My
next work will release in a few days! Subscribe and stay tuned! J
